What you’ll get

  • Film Stock Acquisition

It all begins with an idea. Right from the very beginning, we plan your project’s film shots taking into account your budget, schedule and shooting locations. With that info, we can then sort of acquiring the right types and amount of film stock to fulfill the project.

  • Shot Planning

Once the pre-requisites are established, the sequences to be shot can be planned, blocked-out and choreographed so that when it comes to filming - we can hit the ground running, knowing exactly what is to be shot, and with minimal wastage of the client’s raw film stock.

  • Dispatch to Film Labs

At the end of each shoot day (or at the end of production), dependent on the client’s preference - we can also organise delivery and dispatch to all major motion picture film labs - On8Mil, Cinelab / Digital Orchard, Kodak Film Lab and Gauge Film.

  • Communicating Specs with the Lab

We understand the nature of the project you’ll / we’ll be editing, so we know how to communicate with the film lab the technical and creative specs required. Whether it’s project that requires push/pull development or to discuss scan-types and scanned file formats.

  • Colour Grading For Film

We know how important colour grading is for film so have a specific workflow tailored for each project - whether that’s working with raw scan data of Super 8mm or 16mm Rushes. We can also make edit-friendly viewing files / screener-versions so that you can work with them during the course of the edit.

  • Uploading to Clients / Drive Copies

We handle the upload of Uploading of both Raw Scan Data + Graded Masters/Viewing Files to clients, and can also make streamable/downloadable links so that no matter where you are in the world and your device - you can see your work on-screen.

What are the different gauges?

Super 8mm

Super 8mm Film has a dream-like aesthetic. With it’s roots in home/amateur video making and popularised in the 1970s, With its unique aesthetic quality, it continues to be used in the film community for short films, commercials and music videos. You might even say that all those home movies were just precursors to the picture-taking millennials of today.

A Super 8mm cartridge (50ft) lasts approximately 2mins 30seconds when shooting at 24fps, and can also be shot continuously without the need to cut camera and rewound like in the case of 16mm mechanical/spring-wound cameras we work with.

The closest modern aspect ratio to S8mm is 4:3 / 1.33:1.

Super16mm

Super 16mm offers a wide-screen frame compared with Super 8mm. Its main advantages are increased resolution, and more flexibility in post with regards to the final crop.

Our spring-wound Super 16mm camera is the chieftain of our 16mm work.

  • Yes, we normally request the raw scans only and produce separate graded versions ourselves - due to the additional cost imposed by the film lab, and also being able to have additional control from our side, with the client in-attendance (if needed).

  • Yes, although we currently only have the equipment to capture on Super 16mm - at up to 48fps (2x speed). We have examples available of slow-motion we've shot. It is also possible on Super 8mm at 54fps, but we would need to hire out a camera capable of this.

  • Super 16mm has a wide-screen frame, reasonably close in dimensions to modern 16:9 TV standards. The increased width gained in this format makes it more user-friendly for editors and 'wiggle-room' flexibility in the crop during post, and gives increased resolution.

However, spring-wound S16mm Cameras are less reliable than S8mm Cameras.
